LIPS Florida at a Glance

LIPS Florida is a Central Florida based organization by Black Trans Women for Black and POC Trans folks. It was created to promote health and wellness through support groups, case management, resource sharing, and educational workshops. We meet members of our community where they are, and give them the tools to flourish  into leaders who make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles issued a memo on February 23rd, stating that transgender residents can no longer change the gender on their driver's licenses or state IDs, considering it fraudulent. This move disregards the distinction between sex and gender made by medical organizations. Previously, changes could be made with a court order or a letter from a physician. Civil liberty and LGBTQ groups criticize the decision, seeing it as an attempt to exclude transgender individuals from public life. Florida joins a minority of states limiting gender marker changes on licenses. The department's decision coincides with proposed bills in the Florida Legislature that could impact LGBTQ rights, including one treating allegations of discrimination as defamation and another restricting employees from using preferred pronouns unless they align with their sex traits. Critics argue these measures will harm transgender individuals in the state.

We must fight back against discriminatory laws that harm our community! Join us as we fight for our lives!

A Bit About Us

LIPS Florida addresses the broad spectrum of needs of Transgender individuals in Central Florida. based trans sex workers who's communities are disproportionately impacted by unaddressed human rights abuses and systemic oppression rooted in anti-sex work, transphobia, harmful HIV laws, and racism. LIPS work is achieved through meeting the direct material and holistic needs of trans sex workers by providing safe sex supplies and affordable healthcare, harm reduction, education, and emergency housing options. On a larger scale we push for legislative change and build partnerships with other organizations that help us to better meet the needs of our trans community.
